How Does My Boiler Operate?
A boiler works by creating and circulating heat through water or steam, giving homeowners steady, even comfort throughout the house. Unlike a furnace, it does not rely on ductwork to deliver warmth.
Steam Boilers: These systems heat water until it turns to steam, which travels through pipes to radiators. Steam boilers typically run at higher temperatures and are generally less efficient than hot water boilers.
Hot Water Boilers: These are the most common residential boilers. They heat water and move it through baseboards, radiators, radiant floors, or a heating coil to warm the home.
Gas, Oil, and Electric Boilers: Boilers can run on different fuel sources depending on the home and utility access. In most homes, boilers are fueled by natural gas or oil, while some systems are electric.
When Should I Replace My Boiler?
If your boiler is older, struggling to keep up, or costing more and more to run, it may be time to start planning for a replacement. A newer boiler can improve comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency.
It is more than 15 years old: ENERGY STAR recommends considering replacement when a furnace or boiler is over 15 years old.
Repairs are becoming frequent: If your boiler needs repeated service, replacement may be more cost-effective than continuing to repair an aging system.
Energy bills are rising: Higher heating costs can be a sign that the system is losing efficiency.
Your home heats unevenly: If some rooms feel too hot while others stay cold, the equipment may not be performing the way it should.
